Why the Dickens do some describe their “portable” gas grills as barbeques ?

Would you agree here ?
Garden centres etc describe these expensive items as barbeques.
They are not.
You might as well use the kitchen oven / grill and then take the food outdoors.
I cannot describe mini-steaks, burgers and bangers etc., done in the butane gas grill on the boat, then served on the bankside as a “barbeque”
False pretence and trade descriptions !
I learnt a thing called a desert cooker, which is biscuit tins full of dry sand, and a pint of petrol.
It burns a treat, for ages, and they will do many a proper outdoor meal.

your gas grill is intended for pots and pans and it is not necessarily a grill intended to cook food directly on the surface
They often use alcohol and kerosene..

In the US we use Propane or charcoal Briquet’s occasionally wood chips for smoke can you do that on a boat..??
