Managing a large retail gardening store in the Desert Southwest can be quite an experience. I get hundreds of folks that come from East, North, and the Northern parts of the west. Many are asking me the same type of questions.
What type of plants and trees will grow here in the Southwest? Here is my response: Almost the same type of trees and plants that do well in your in the area that you came from.
The Desert Southwest does provide some challenging landscaping needs. For one the temperatures during the mid hot summer months can make most non-natives to think twice about why they decided to live here in the first place.
Oh yea…it can get very hot and dry. You can however still grow stuff that grows elsewhere in the United States providing you take the proper steps.
Watering: You will need to water more frequently than other parts of the southwest. Use a good drip system to make better use of water.
Xeriscaping: Drought tolerant plants and shrubs such as the Creosote, Ocotillo, and numerous varieties of Sages need little or no water after the first year of planting.
You can plant Oak trees, Dogwoods, Lilacs and Maple trees but it is important to keep watering during the first 5-10 years after planting. Be sure to use compost to amend the soil.
Fertilize: Fertilizing is about the same as anywhere else. Typically you should fertilize most plants and trees once in spring, summer and early fall. Most desert type trees and plants do not like any type of fertilizer. Native trees such as the Desert Willow, Mesquite and Pinon trees do not tolerate any type of fertilizer. It is best to plant and water during the initial planting period.
Soil: Alkaline soil commonly occurs in arid or desert regions of the Southwest. This is due to the minimal amount of rainfall. Acidity and compost material is also lacking. It is always recommended to use good composting soil when planting most plants that are not native to the Southwest.
There are some plants and trees that will not do well in the hot summer Southwestern heat. But it does depend on the elevation of your area. If you are not sure contact you county extension agent or call the local retail nursery store.
